World Book Day
“Everyone is a reader, some just haven’t found their favorite book yet.”
I have continuously labeled myself as a “non-reader”. It feels like I have always struggled to sit down and get into a book. Assigned reading? Don’t know her. A.R. tests? The bane of my existence. BUT when I happened upon a book that grabbed me, I flew through the story, I'd forget I was reading. And for a moment I loved reading, for a moment I was a reader. I think this is true for a lot of people. We don't realize just how many different books are out there and when we get to choose what we are reading we can actually enjoy it. Doesn't matter the "reading level" or if the New York Times best seller list deems it "worthy".
Ask me about my favorite books and I will explain in DETIAL why I have read them more than once. (The Hunger Games series, Little Women, The Gallagher Girl Academy - just to drop a few)
Books are worlds to escape into. Safe places. Imaginary friends. Whether its a fantasy land or just a "normal" day, books give us the opportunity to go somewhere else. At some point someone decided we didn't need pictures in our books anymore and though in school I definitely would have preferred reading picture books, reading without pictures stretches your imagination in all directions. How COOL is it that everyone that reads a book sees something slightly different. You create the world, the characters, the interpretation of the author's descriptions are all up to YOU.
Lets talk about the diversity in what books can do! Some draw you in, distance you from the outside world. Some show you how to go out and explore the real world you live in. Some teach us new things about how to do something or how to be a better person. There are SO MANY PURPOSES to books. There are so many genres waiting for YOU to explore.
Whether your favorite book is “moo baa la la la” or what society dubs the greatest literary work ever written or something in between, take it from this "non reader" (who is ironically going to get a master's in teaching English) there is a book out there for you too.
~ Be you

p.s. I know books I have read and enjoyed are missing but by simply thinking here are some books from my list (ranging from reads for pre-teen me - now me):
"The Gallagher Girl Academy" (I have re-read this entire series more times than I can count. Also just any of Ally Carter's books)
"The Hunger Games (all the books even the new president snow one)
""Little Women"
"The Penderwicks" (similar concept as LW but shorter and younger)
"Love Ruby Lavender"
"Island of the Blue Dolphins"
"Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet"
"The Chronicles of Narnia"
"The Little Prince"
"Lost Girls of Camp Forevermore"
"Girl, Wash your face"
"Looking for Alaska" (this made me cry in a corner)
*Okay technically these were on a required reading list but I actually remember enjoying reading it and the discussions that followed: "The Great Gatsby", "To Kill a Mockingbird", "Fahrenheit 451"
