The Same Sunrise
Have you ever thought about how the sun we see rise and set every day, is the same sun that Jesus saw? Last Sunday morning, a friend and I went to the sunrise Easter service at the American Church in Paris, on the quai (sidewalk near the Seine). Getting up at 6:00am was rough, but I kept telling myself, when am I ever going to get this chance again, to worship Jesus as the sun rises over Paris? And hey, at least there were actually seats on the metro!
When the circle of the sun started to peep out and rise as we sang "How Great Thou Art" it made the early morning sleepiness fade away. The Holy Spirit was in this place with us.

During the benediction the pastor said "how cool to watch the sunrise, the same sunrise Jesus saw". And that struck me that morning. Its been really fun to walk the streets of Paris and think of all the history here. How kings and queens promenaded through the same park as me, Hemingway wrote away at a café I walked by, actors and actresses have taken photos infront of the same monuments as me. First it humanizes these people but secondly it makes me feel like we are all apart of the same life. Yes, we have different timelines, purposes, and opportunities, but a street is a street and we both walked on it.
I've realized, it is very unlikely that I will get to travel to the Biblical lands in my life, to walk where Jesus and his disciples walked, to see the places I've read about in scripture since I was little. I've had to feel apart of Jesus through church, nature, scripture, the presence of the Holy Spirit - all great things - but not the same and that morning I experienced the revelation that the sun that I see rise and set is the same sun Jesus saw, bit brought me this sense of connection. That on days where I feel undeserving of God's love or just feel absent from the Holy Spirit, even then Jesus and I have the sun in common. Its this tangible representation of relationship.
I don't know if any of this makes sense, but it brought me comfort that morning so I wanted to share it with you.
Happy Easter.
